PSYCHIC READINGS AND THE CHRISTIAN CHURCH

Dr. D. H. Parsons

One of the most worthwhile experiences any person can have is the privilege of providing comfort and closure in another person’s life when that person has lost a Loved One.

Clearly, one of the most effective methods of doing this is via an Intuitive – or Psychic – Reading Session … the Institute has coined and copyrighted the phrase: “Intuitive Conversations” for these readings.  And after having given several of these over the years I can attest to the fact that each reading I give is just as rewarding as the one that came before it.  At the end of a session the personal satisfaction gained by both the reader and the one being read simply cannot be put into words.  The hugs … the tears … and the intense Love that is manifested during a reading and passed between the Reader and the “Readee” is a feeling that seems to defy the laws of ordinary physical emotion.

There is also an energy of kindness and sweetness that permeates the room when a reading is being experienced.  I cannot count the number of times that a readee has entered into a session with intense emotion –anger, frustration,
loneliness and even hatred – only to be changed dramatically by the information provided during the session.  “I could feel my Loved One’s presence next to me when you told me that he loved me.”  “It felt like I was being wrapped in a blanket of love all through the reading.”  “I have something to live for now that I know he’s really okay and watching over me.”  These are only a few of the statements made by some of my readees.

Yet, for all of the goodness and the Love that is provided by an Intuitive Reading there are still those who find fault with the entire procedure.  Usually these fall into one of two categories:

1. Those who are skeptical of anything of a parapsychological nature simply because they choose to disbelieve – and no amount  of proof to the contrary will ever change their mind.
2. Those who have been taught from an early age – via religious doctrine – that anything that is misunderstood is “of the Devil.”

Anyone who falls within the first category is difficult to convince, but it is possible.  I have known several whom, after having a legitimate firsthand experience with an Intuitive Reading, in which a Loved One has communicated to them a very personal message, became devoted believers on the spot and are passionate about such things even to this day.

But the second category is a different story.  Religious indoctrination (of any faith) is a very tough nut to crack.  And I suppose that’s the way it should be with the Truths and Teachings of God - Who brought them into our culture to begin with.

Since I have a limited background in the subtle nuances of doctrine and dogma from the religions of other countries I must limit my review to Christianity.  And this is where the water muddies a bit because there are, quite frankly, some Christians who believe in parapsychological experience and others who do not.  There are some who “sort of” believe it, and there are some who are adamant about it being evil.  Yet, all of the above gain their information from the same source: the Bible.

Oddly enough, when a proper study of the Bible is done, the evidence in favor of benevolent communication with “those on the Other Side” far outweighs the evidence against.  In fact, both the Old and the New Testaments are filled with examples of Spirit contact, ESP, prophecy, the Silver Cord, several levels of Heaven, remote viewing, séance, out of body experience, astral traveling, near death experiences … you name it and it’s in the Bible. And absolutely none of these experiences are mentioned in a negative vein.

It seems that the main problem has to do with the word, “Psychic.” Mention this term to a mainstream Christian and stand back because you will receive a real tongue-lashing and, in all probability, will be informed that you are evil.

Yet, this term isn’t even in the original text of the Bible.

And please do not begin to assume that because of what I have written thus far that I am anti-Christian in any way.  That opinion could not be farther from the Truth.  I was baptized into a Christian church at a very young age and I actually enjoyed attending church as a child, and still do today.  However, over the years I have learned to separate Truth from fiction.  I have learned to separate common sense from fanaticism.

You see, although I do believe the Bible is the inherent, infallible Word of God, a serious problem is thrown into the mix whenever a fallible, human being applies his or her interpretation or opinion to the original scripture.  And this happens all the time.  Every denomination within the Christian church is the result of a fallible opinion that disagreed with another fallible opinion causing a split in a larger denomination resulting into two, new, smaller denominations. This has been going on for many years and what we find today is not one, accurate and authoritative Christian church … but hundreds of little spin-off churches none of which agrees with any of the others.

Do you see the problem?  Again, I am not finding fault with Christianity because it is no different than any other religion on the planet earth.  I’m not finding fault with anyone.  I’m merely revealing an obvious Truth that very few seem to be willing to admit: God is Infallible and we are not.

What God says is infallible, but what we say is not. It’s as simple as that.  We are human and we make mistakes.

There seems to be as many mistaken interpretations of scripture as there are people alive today.  And everyone who came before – throughout all the centuries since the birth of Christ – has added his or her own personal slant to those original scriptures.  The result is not that the Bible is wrong … but that there is a lot of misinformation out there, and instead of going back to the source to find the Truth, most appear willing to settle into the delusion of false doctrine.

In and of itself, that wouldn’t be much of a problem.   If folks were just content to keep it all to themselves everything would be fine.  But the difficulty begins when a person or a group of persons begins to believe that their doctrine is not only more correct than everyone else’s doctrine, but also more correct than the Bible itself.  This kind of attitude frequently leads to anger, division, hatred, denominationalism and even violence.

And getting back to the term Psychic  … I would love to quote a reference in the Bible that actually condemns this folks.  But, again, the fact is, there is none.  Oh yes, there is a reference or two about soothsayers and fortunetellers, but those are totally different than Psychics.  In fact, the closest description of any in the Bible who even come close to resembling a Psychic, are the Biblical Prophets themselves.  Jeremiah, Daniel, Isaiah, David; the major and the minor prophets of the Old Testament; and even into the New Testament with the Apostles and Jesus Himself … all exhibited many of the same skills and gifts that any modern day Psychic would exhibit.

I’m not going to become too carried away in this article because I know this argument has been made many times before.  But it’s frustrating when Truth, commonsense and logic are thrown to the wayside and replaced by bias and opinion.

I would never propose that my opinion is the only opinion when it comes to Spiritual Truth.  The fact is that I delight in discussing the options and discovering new Truths to add to the old.  I love my own Christian upbringing and I have studied the Bible in great detail over many years and have found it second to none in accuracy and in content.  I love Jesus as much as or even more so than any other Christian.  But I will never agree with all of the nonsense out there that is being presented as Truth.

I believe that the same Psychic/Intuitive abilities the Prophets, Apostles and Disciples of old exhibited on the pages of the Bible are available to us today and that they are clearly one of the “Gifts of the Spirit” as proposed in Romans chapter 12 of the New Testament.

What’s more, as stated earlier, nearly all of the manifested powers and experiences of a Psychic are clearly outlined in the Bible as exhibited by Jesus, the Apostles, the Prophets and many of the common Disciples. I bring to your attention, for your own study, the following Biblical (few among many) references attesting to that fact:

2 Timothy 3:16 & 2 Peter 1:21 – wherein God “Channels” through men the information that was to become the Bible.

Matthew 17: 1-3 – wherein “Crossed Over” Spirits become visible to Jesus.

John 20:19-31 – an incredibly close description of several experiences that are common to Psychic Mediums today. (Spirits walking through walls, séances, etc.)

Matt 17:2 – Jesus invokes the Spirits of Moses and Elijah.

1 Corinthians 12 – relates the gift of “Discerning Spirits.”

2 Corinthians 12:1-4 – very clearly refers to an Out Of Body Experience and the various levels of “Heaven.”

Job 4:15-17; 14:10 – reference to Ghosts.

Now … you can “spin” these in any way you wish, but the fact remains they mean what they say.  And these are only a few.  Also consider that God, Himself, is referred to as a “Spirit.”  Jesus , Himself, is now in Spirit form interceding for us from the “Other Side.”

My question in closing is simple:  where is the conflict?  Not only are all of these experiences not condemned in any way, but also those who are the Greatest among the Greatest in the Bible performed them. And what’s more, please take note of some of the last words Jesus left with us before He “ascended” into Heaven:

“And greater things than you have seen me do, you shall do …”

It seems that the real problem is mainly one of semantics.  As Christians, we have no problem with words or phrases such as intuition, prophecy, the still small voice inside, prayer, or even the act of hearing or feeling the presence of our Loved Ones who are already in Heaven.  We have no problem with the countless intuitive moments, dreams and visions that were experienced by the Biblical Prophets, apostles and disciples - not to mention the millions of disciples throughout the past 2000 years and into today.  If we will only substitute psychic for intuition, extra sensory perception for prophecy, clairaudience or channeling for still small voice … etc. etc. etc. … we will find that although the words are different, the meanings are identical.
